Work rights & permits

Start with nationality and the exact contract. EU mobility is straightforward, while non-European seasonal workers need employer-led authorisation and the correct visa or residence status.

EU / EEA / Swiss citizens

Citizens covered by European free-movement rules can work in France without a work permit and have the same core employment rights and obligations as French employees.

Non-European workers

The employer normally has to obtain work authorisation before employing a non-European national unless the person already holds a status that permits work.

Seasonal worker route

The French seasonal-worker residence route is for non-European workers whose seasonal activity totals no more than six months per year while their main home remains abroad.

Each new contract

A seasonal residence card does not authorise every job automatically. A work authorisation is required for each new employment contract covered by the route.

Working Holiday

Eligible nationalities and age groups may have a separate Working Holiday route allowing temporary work. Check the France-Visas wizard rather than assuming eligibility.

Guidance only: verify current immigration, employment, wage, tax and housing rules on the linked official websites before making decisions. *The SMIC is gross and exceptions can apply.
